Telemark Skiing

Telemark Skiing in Vail, CO

Telemark skiing, sometimes referred to as “free-heel skiing”, is a hybrid combining cross-country skiing with downhill skiing. The sport was founded in the 19th century by Sondre Norheim in Norway.

Telemark skis have a binding that connects the toe of the boot to the skis leaving the heel detached. With the heels detached from the skis, it allows skiers to transform their turns into graceful movements down the hill. However, beware because there is no ejecting from the bindings. Therefore, if you are not a strong intermediate to advanced skier, Exclusive Vail Rentals does not recommend Telemark skiing in Vail.

Vail offers a variety of telemark ski lessons in Colorado, including workshops, tours, group lessons, and public lessons. For more information, visit the Vail.com official website. Be sure to wear insulating layers including ski pants, gloves, a waterproof jacket, a hat, wool socks, and goggles. Try to avoid bulky jackets to ensure you’re not constricting movement.
