For those adventurers, Vail ice climbing awaits! Ice climbing evolved out of rock climbing where climbers ascend ice formations. The activity dates back to 1908 when Oscar Eckenstein developed crampons, a traction device featuring toothed claws that fit at the bottom of boots.
If you are planning on embarking on an ice climbing excursion during your vacation, Exclusive Vail Rentals suggests Vail’s Apex Mountain School. Climbs range from beginner to advance or you can have a custom itinerary built for you!
The Apex Mountain School offers outings every day, available for all ages and skill levels. Ice climbing gear includes boots, crampons, ice axes, helmets and more. It is recommended to wear wool socks, a winter jacket, snow pants, mittens or gloves, a hat and sunglasses or goggles. Make sure to bring food and a bottle of water for the day.
